Contemporary Vietnamese, Basic Level, is a general Vietnamese course, aimed at enabling learners to communicate successfully in both spoken and written Vietnamese at basic level. The course will be conducted by bilingual teachers from Vietnam, who possess teaching qualifications, rich language-teaching experience, noble teachers’ qualities and, most importantly, speak standard Vietnamese. Learners will develop integrated language skills during the course and will be able to speak, listen, read and write basic Vietnamese by the end of the course.  

In this course, students will be engaged in a large number of different classroom activities which automatically and naturally build up their language skills, vocabulary, socio-economics and culture awareness of Vietnam. Popular speech acts such as greeting, introducing, informing, inquiring, replying, reporting, requesting, confirming, comparing, apologizing, appreciating, and so on will be practiced throughout the course. Students will build up confidence in starting, maintaining and ending conversations. Moreover, students will, through classroom activities, create for themselves opportunities to interact with each other, and promising precious relationships as well as language competence will be established. Students, with the assistance and support from teachers who always update their lessons with new information, latest linguistic knowledge and modern teaching technology, are going to become active learners who will participate actively in the process of self-assessment implemented during every lesson. Also, more efforts from teachers will be made in helping students master the sound system in Vietnamese language in order that students will feel confident, comfortable and relaxed when communicating in Vietnam. Besides textbooks, students will also be given handouts and supplementary materials which help them practise and comprehend the language structures. This competence will function as a ground for higher language level acquisition.

From Monday to Saturday

Students will be engaged in different situational and communicative language activities such as role play, interviews, information gap, games, language exchanges, survey, pair work, grammar quizzes and so on. Teachers will analyze students’ needs, set contexts and design tasks for students to practise the language.

Text books are professionally designed and written by a professional team of linguistic experts and language teachers from National University of Vietnam and the Institute of Vietnam Studies and Science Development, following the communicative approach in language teaching. The books are targeted at adult foreign learners and were published in 2004 in Vietnam by the World Publishing House.

Participants who have attained an attendance rate of 90% and above will be presented with certification of completion. Students’ portfolios, including all students’ papers, assessment sheets and tests, will be given back to students by the end of the course.

All of our teachers are native speakers from Vietnam, who hold Master or Bachelor degrees in language teaching or in other relevant fields. Their qualifications have been approved by MOE. They communicate in both Vietnamese and English. They are enthusiastic, responsible, and dedicated.
